WINES TO BE AUCTIONED

We are most excited about some of the wines that we will have available for auction this year.

See the list below for the phenomenal wines that we will be auctioning this year.

Lake Norman Rotary Auction 2011  Live Lots

1. Two bottles – Opus One – 2004
Wine Spectator 92-94
2004 – Excellent structure, tannins and acidity, with sturdy currant, blackberry, fresh earth, mineral and a whiff of tar and tobacco. A remarkably complex and impeccably balanced young wine that flexes its tannic muscle on the finish.

2. Three Bottles – Tantara 2007
Santa Maria Valley – Pinot Noir/Solomon Hills Vineyard

Notes from Burghound.com on this classic 2007 vintage Pinot Noir
“A pretty nose of ripe and slightly spiced cherry, raspberry and plum is nuanced with earth and underbrush hints that can also be found on the nicely rich and round medium-bodied flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel on the solidly long and complex finish.

3. Medley of Classic California Reds – Three bottles

  • 2004 Pahlmeyer Merlot (RMP 92)

    • A Merlot Dry Red Table wine from Napa, North Coast, California, USA. Pahlmeyer has consistently produced one of the finest, most ageworthy Merlots in California. Their 2004 Merlot (a blend of 87.5% Merlot and 12.5% Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits a soft, fleshy, up-front, charming bouquet of chocolate, berry fruit, and roasted herbs. Round, front-end loaded, and seductive, it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.

  • 2005 Araujo Altagracia (RMP 92)

    • Araujo Estate - A Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Red Table wine from Napa, North Coast, California, USA.

The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Altagracia (91% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) reveals a spicy, mineral-laden, black fruit, damp forest, truffle, and crushed rock-scented bouquet. With lovely fruit, medium to full body, and no hard edges, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years.

Despite having over 40-plus acres of vineyards in the northeasterly sector of Napa just south of Calistoga, the production at Araujo remains relatively limited, with the flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, producing between 1,600 and 2,200 cases of wine, and the second wine, the Altagracia, between 800 and 1,200 cases. Add to that another 1,000 cases of Sauvignon Blanc and 300-400 cases of Syrah, and there is just not a lot to go around given the greatness that can be achieved from this vineyard. Much of the credit has to go to proprietors Bart and Daphne Araujo and, of course, their top-notch winemaking team, which has always been led by Francoise Peschon. Araujo’s second wines are among the finest second wines consumers will find in northern California. For example, the Altagracia cuvees, which represent 25-35% of the production, have been outstanding examples of Cabernet Sauvignon. Araujo has done an excellent job with Syrah, which they typically co-ferment with 3-4% Viognier. Sadly, only 300-400 cases are produced.

  • 2005 Swanson Alexis Cabernet (WS 90)

    • Delivers subtle, complex black cherry, currant, spice and cedary oak notes that are well-structured and well-proportioned, gaining depth and richness and ending with a nice touch of toasty oak. Best from 2011 through 2017. 1,187 cases made.

4. 2005 Stewart Nomad Napa Valley Cabernet RMP 93+

A Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Red Table wine from
Napa, North Coast, California, USA

Source: Wine Advocate # 180 Dec 2008

Reviewer: Robert Parker

Rating: 93+

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Nomad exhibits a dense purple color as well as sweet, pure notes of black fruits, incense, licorice, cedar, and spice. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, substantial flavor authority, elegance, and a burgeoning complexity, it should evolve easily for 15 or more years.

5. Two Magnums:

  • 2005 Patz and Hall Dutton Ranch Chardonnay 2005 Patz and Hall Dutton Ranch Chardonnay ST 91

    • Patz & Hall Chard =Rated: 91 by Stephen Tanzer, May/Jun 07
“Bright yellow. Restrained, pure nose hints at lemon ice; quite Chablis-like. Juicy, sharply delineated, if more tropical fruity in the mouth; but the flavors of pineapple and guava are refreshing rather than heavy. A nicely gripping chardonnay that conveys an impression of texture without weight. Finishes fresh and persistent.”

  • 22005 Joseph Phelps Cabernet005 Joseph Phelps Cabernet RMP 89

    • Jos. Phelps Cab = Rated 89 by Robert Parker

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses aromas of creme de cassis, bay leaf, and spice box as well as soft tannins, medium body, and luscious fruit. It is a delicious, French-styled effort to drink over the next decade”

6. Two Cab Magnums - 2006 Silver Oak Alexander / 2008 Caymus

Caymus-93WS/Silver Oak 88WS “Wines that speak for themselves & are most popular.”

  • 2006 Silver Oak Alexander 2006 Silver Oak Alexander

    • "The 2006 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon combines full body and richness with moderate alcohol. It has a garnet color and a nose of cassis liqueur, nutmeg and dark chocolate. On the palate, it has a rich, mouth-coating attack, great expression of fruit, a full-body and beautifully integrated tannins that lead to a long, spicy finish. Given proper cellaring, this wine will give drinking pleasure through 2026."

  • 2008 Caymus Cabernet2008 Caymus

    • "Open fruit, rich, lush and layered, serving up a complex mix of plum, blackberry, black licorice and spices. Full-bodied and supple-textured, ending with a long, persistent finish that keeps repeating the core flavor themes. Drink now through 2018."

This year's wine will be...

2007 August Briggs Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon2007 August Briggs Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2007 August Briggs Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of two very special mountain vineyards: The first is the famed Stagecoach vineyard on the rocky, volcanic soils of Atlas Peak; and the second is the Corbett vineyard located on a rocky hillside just north of the town on St. Helena in the Spring Mountain appellation. Both of these vineyards are located proximately 1000 feet above the Napa Valley floor.

About This Wine:

This is a ripe, plush, generous wine, with an elegant structure. It has a dark, densely colored garnet color with aromas of violet, cherries, and smoky oak. The wine is plush and juicy on the palate with deep persistent flavors of ripe-ripe raspberry and blackberry with mocha and cassis. The finish is easy and clean with hints of dark chocolate. With all its fruity exuberance this is a wine that can be enjoyed young. However, if cellared, the wine's character will improve into 2012.

This is a big but approachable cab that pairs well with meaty dishes, such as roasted or barbequed meats. The two vineyard lots were vinified separately before blending. Each received a two day cold soak before fermentation was allowed to begin. During fermentation a combination of punchdowns and pumpovers were employed to gently attain the maximum extraction from the skins without the harsh tannins. As with the other Cabernets, sugar levels were monitored carefully during fermentation, and at dryness the must was gently pressed and put to 50% French and 50% American small oak barrels. The wine was barrel aged for 20 months prior to bottling. Only 240 cases were produced and this wine is now sold out.

Information available via the August Briggs website.
